Pokemon Crystal has been around for over 20 years, but it’s still an amazing game to return to for avid fans of the series. Of course, after all that time, we’ve found just about every cheat in the book to make this game even more fun than it already is.
In this article, we’ve pulled together (and tested) the absolute best pokemon crystal cheats we could find. Whether you’re using them for a special playthrough, to hunt down some shiny pokemon, or to modify your pokemon, this is the list for you.
How Do You Use Pokemon Crystal Cheats
Pokemon Crystal is an older game, so naturally, the coding isn’t quite as impressive as some other titles you might have played. Fortunately, the actual process of applying cheat codes isn’t much different from other games in the franchise.
One of the most important parts of using cheat codes is having a method of actually applying those cheat codes. Since the majority of players will be using emulators, that’s what we’ll be focusing on.
However, since emulators use virtual versions of cheat cartridges, the same codes would work if you were using an actual GameBoy with an actual cheat cartridge.
All of the codes we have listed here are compatible with a Gameshark device. While the codes themselves refer back to places within the code of the game itself, different cheat cartridges can make use of different hex encryption styles.
So, using Codebreaker or Game Genie might be fine, but we suggest just sticking with the program we’ve tested.
Beyond that, we also suggest using a GameBoy Advanced emulator rather than a Gameboy emulator. In general, since the physical versions of these consoles had better tech, the emulators are also easier to use than an emulator of a classic GameBoy or Gameboy Color. Thank god for backward-compatible gaming.
Enabling Cheat Codes in Pokemon Crystal
Actually inputting and applying cheat codes is a fairly straightforward process. Once you have your ROM loaded up into your emulator, you should be able to open up cheats somewhere in your settings.
Every emulator will have this placed somewhere slightly different, but it should be hard to miss the setting option that says ‘cheat’, ‘cheat codes’, or something similar.
Once you click on that, you should see a pop-up window that looks something like the image below.
Of course, yours will be empty, so you’ll need to start adding. The process of adding codes can be a bit counterintuitive. For the best results, use the following steps:
- Click ‘Add Gameshark’. This should create a new, untitled item in the left area.
- Click on the untitled item and name it. Naming isn’t necessary but is definitely helpful.
- With the item highlighted, copy a code into the area labeled ‘Enter codes here…’.
- Click Add.
- You should now be able to check the box next to the item, enabling the cheat code.
Again, the exact user interface may differ from emulator to emulator, but the process for adding cheat codes is generally the same with minor variations. As long as you ensure the code is added, the virtual cheat cartridge is selected, and the code is marked as enabled, you should be good to go.
Lastly, for most cheats, you’ll want to drop a fresh save before enabling them. This allows you to protect your game data in the case of a crash and also aids the actual application process.
To the same effect, once you’ve successfully used your code for the desired effect, you should save the game and turn off the code. Leaving codes enabled for too long, or enabling too many codes at the same time, is a surefire way to land yourself in a crashed game.
Troubleshooting Pokemon Crystal Cheats
Using cheat codes is a process that involves literally changing the game’s code to get some sort of desired outcome. You’re essentially hacking the game, and this means there’s a risk of some serious issues, or that they might not work at all.
So, remember to save often, turn off cheats when you’re not using them, and for any troubleshooting needs, follow the steps below.
- Apply your cheat codes. It’s easy to forget to check a box, so start here if your cheat code isn’t working.
- Doublecheck your code. Cheat codes don’t have any auto-correct so any misspellings, extra spaces, or other errors can completely stop a code from running.
- Use a different virtual cheat cartridge. The Gameshark codes you’ve input might not work with the specific virtual cheat cartridge you have it applied to.
- Reduce the number of applied codes. The more cheat codes you have enabled, the more likely it is that they can conflict with other and cause some undesired outcomes.
Pokemon Crystal Cheats
We’ve compiled a list of functioning cheat codes that can allow you to do any number of incredible things within Pokemon Crystal. Everything here is tested so you won’t have to worry about codes not working as intended.
We also want to make it very clear that there are some popular cheat codes you might see on other sites which we do not include. Those codes don’t work, and we’re not going to be throwing them around just because they’re popular.
Remember, the codes we’ve listed are all Gameshark codes. While they should work with programs, this is what we’ve used to test these Pokemon Crystal cheat codes.
Item Cheat Codes
Item cheat codes allow you to hack certain items into the game that would generally be difficult or even impossible to obtain.
Unlimited Rare Candy cheat Code
These cheat codes allow you to obtain virtually infinite rare candies.
The first code replaces the first item in your bag with Rare Candy, maintaining the same quantity.
The second allows you to purchase rare candy at the PokeMart. This is expensive but doesn’t require you to replace other items. Plus, you can use the infinite money cheat we have listed further below so money isn’t a concern.
Rare Candy in Bag – 012093D8
Rare Candy at PokeMart – 9120F1D0
Unlimited Master balls Cheat
This cheat code allows you to purchase a Master Ball at the PokeMart.
0101F1D0
9101EAD1
Specific Pokemart Items Cheat Codes
This collection of cheat codes can be used to modify purchasable items at the PokeMart. To use one of the codes, choose the item slot you’d like to utilize, and then replace xx in its code with the two digits we have listed next to the items.
As an example, if you wanted to purchase a Blackbelt from the first slot at a PokeMart, you could use the code ‘0162F1D0′.
Pokemart Item Slot
If you do not replace xx with an item this code will do nothing.
First Slot – 01xxF1D0
Second Slot – 01xxF2D0
Third Slot – 01xxF3D0
Fourth Slot – 01xxF4D0

Wild Pokemon Cheat Codes
Wild Pokemon Level Modifier Cheat
This cheat allows you to change the level of pokemon you encounter in the wild. We will warn you, this cheat does require a small knowledge of hexadecimal.
This is because you’ll be replacing xx with the level you want, however, that level should be in hexadecimal, not decimal. For example, inputting 99 would give you a pokemon that’s level 153, and that could easily see you running into some issues.
For our purposes, all you really need to know is that the code for level 100 is 64, the code for level 1 is 01, and you can include A, B, C, D, E, or F in the second digit, but not the first. Here are a few examples: 0E is okay, 5F is okay, 65 is not okay, and B3 is not okay.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, here’s the actual code. Again, remember to replace xx.

Encounter Shiny Pokemon Cheat Code
This code guarantees that the pokemon you encounter will be shiny. The one major side effect is that it eliminates your ability to run away from battles.

Walk Through Walls
This cheat code will allow you to, you guessed it, walk through walls (and trees, ponds, or anything else you wouldn’t typically be able to). This code can quickly result in some serious glitches though, so avoid wandering too far off the path.
Also, turn the code off before walking through any doors.
